Omemee Ontario

The Village of Omeemee in the City of Kawartha Lakes is, like most of Kawartha Lakes communities, located on water. The Pigeon River flows through the village and it is from this river that Omeemee takes its name, being the Mississauga word for pigeon.

Omeemee has a population of approximately 1400 which makes it the 4th largest centre of population in Kawartha Lakes. The village is located on Highway 7 between Peterborough and Lindsay which are by far the two largest population centres in the region. Today Omeemee is primarily a bedroom community for those two larger centres.

Omeemee's main claim to fame is as the "town in northern Ontario" from Neil Young's song "Helpless". The Young Town Rock and Roll Museum located in the village is reference to the Neil Young connection as the Young family spent many summers cottaging near by. There is also a public school in the village named after Neil Young's father Scott Young.
